Dustin Diamond (Screech from Saved By The Bell) The Chess Player

Dustin Diamond is famous for his starring role as the character "Screech" (Samuel Powers) in the sitcom "Saved by the Bell". In one of the episodes of "Saved by the Bell", Screech beats a Russian foreign exchange student in a chess tournament. According to Diamond, "They wrote chess into the show because they knew I was a good player and figured it would be a geeky thing for Screech to do as well."

Diamond is one of the most skilled (US chess rating was once 2247) of the current celebrity chess playing fraternity. After his 13-year run as Screech ended, Diamond released an instructional video Dustin Diamond Teaches Chess. Justin relates that, "I made the video for kids 5-8 or thereabouts to learn the game without going to sleep."

Dustin Diamond Chess Related Quotes:
"My father taught me chess at an early age (5). I studied until I reached Master strength (2247) then started working with inner city kids (kids with no fathers or male influences in their lives) alongside other celebs to keep them on the straight and narrow. Chess playing Celebs include... Peter Falk - Wu-Tang Clan - Drew Carrey - Wil Smith - etc." ["Screech" on "Screech", Washington Post, 27 April 2005]

I enjoy the game but don't obsess over it. It is as close to perfection as you can get. No luck. No randomness. You can't cheat. Perfect. ["Screech" on "Screech", Washington Post, 27 April 2005]

There is an interesting interview by Ily Goyanes (here) with Rachel Kramer Bussel on the website Rachel is a prolific writer and editor whose written work in particular eroticizes the relationship between men and women. Her passions / interests revolve around sexuality, cupcakes and chess.

Rachel started playing chess as a teenager, competing in tournaments, and even attending a competition in Brazil. She freely admits to being a nerdy youth and thinks she still may be a bit nerdy. Rachel still plays chess, just not in tournaments now.

For those of you interested - Rachel is a member of the Greenpoint Chess Club (New York).

We at ALCHEssMIST Towers salute you Rachel.

Eminem - Mariah Carey Feud - This ain’t checkers. This is chess!

Eminem & Mariah Carey:

There is a feud going on between Eminem and Mariah Carey (plus husband Nick Cannon) which is being reported on a number of celebrity websites.

In Eminem's new song called “The Warning,” the star unleashes a barrage of profanities against Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon (host of “America’s Got Talent”). Eminem also claims in the song to have slept with Mariah "once" and to have "pictures" of her. One line from "The Warning" goes:
"Enough dirt on you to murder you. This is what the f*** I do Mariah, it ever occur to you that I still have pictures?"
Nick cannon's reply to all this on his Twitter account is:
"This ain’t checkers. This is chess!"
Not quite certain what this actually means but hey the chess-checker metaphor is doing the rounds these days with other examples including a Kobe Bryant quote (here) and a political comparison between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton (here).
